Whidbey Island is located in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains which means that most of the island receives significantly less rain than Seattle, Portland or Vancouver, BC. The southern end of the island has a ferry terminal connecting the village of Clinton to Mukilteo, which runs every 1/2 hour. A number of South Whidbey residents work on the mainland, and there is even a commuter train from the Mukliteo ferry terminal into downtown Seattle. The northern end of Whidbey is connected to Fidalgo Island and the mainland by road by the historic Deception Pass bridge.
